Example 1: Skater is in Star 4 and begins enrolment in the club in Winter and continues through Spring and Summer seasons. Volunteers will be required to complete 6 hours in total or pay $120 opt-out fee.
Example 2: Skater is Star 1 level in Fall and moves to Star 2 in Winter and continues through Spring and Summer seasons. Volunteer will be required to volunteer in 1 position at a chosen event listed (no minimum hours designated) or pay $50 opt-out fee.
Example 3: Skater is Rising Star Academy in Fall and moves up to Star 1 in Winter and Spring but does not continue in Summer season. Volunteer will be required to volunteer in 1 position at a chosen event listed (no minimum hours designated) or pay $50 opt-out fee.
Example 4: Skater is Star 1 level in Fall and moves to Star 2 in Winter and continues through Spring but does not enroll in Summer. Volunteer will be required to volunteer in 1 position at a chosen event listed (no minimum hours designated) or pay $50 opt-out fee.
Example 5: Skater is Star 3 level in Fall and moves to Star 4 in Winter and continues through Spring but does not enroll in Summer. Volunteer will be required to complete 7 total hours or pay $140 opt-out fee.

Volunteer FAQ
Please contact the Club’s Volunteer Chair. They can help you find suitable roles and manage your hours. They’re committed to being flexible and supportive throughout the season. The goal is to help every skater or family meet their volunteer requirements without incurring a fee.
The club needs volunteer time, not money. However, if roles aren’t filled, we must hire staff. The fee is calculated using $20 for hiring outside sourced workers multiplied by the required hours.
The fee may be prorated. Partial fulfillment risks disrupting club operations, as volunteer requirements are carefully calculated to meet seasonal needs, however, the club understands that there may be a variety of situations, which families don’t anticipate and initially have good intentions to complete the required volunteer hours. Therefore, the club will adjust the opt-out fee as necessary.
Depending on when your skater has begun enrolment at DSC, the hours are based on either of the two volunteer requirements charts. The fee amount chosen is considerate of BC’s minimum wage rounded up to the nearest even number ($20). Using $20 multiplied by the required hours.
Example 1:
A family has two skaters beginning in Fall. One skater is enrolled in Star 1. The other skater is enrolled in Star 3 and remains in this level through to the end of the year. The required number of hours is based on the highest skater level within the family, which in this case is Star 3. For the duration of the year, this family must complete 5 hours. The opt-out fee is 5 hours x $20 = $100.

Each year, the club’s volunteer committee evaluates the volunteer needs based on planned competitions and events. The total hours are then distributed across the average number of competitive skaters to ensure coverage and fairness
This structure is designed to ensure fairness by aligning volunteer hour requirements with ice time. Skaters who participate at a higher level are asked to contribute more volunteer hours, as the levels also require a higher minimum number of commitment skate days, while those with lighter schedules have a smaller commitment. This approach reflects our original intent for upper-level skaters to give back more, while easing the load for those newer to the sport.
Our skating club is a non-profit organization. We rely on volunteers to keep costs low and ensure skaters get the most out of their time on the ice.
This policy helps:
● Maximize coaching ice time for skaters
● Minimize operational costs
● Build a strong, supportive skating community
A friend or other family member (who may or may not be a member of the club) can perform the volunteer hours on the members behalf. The friend must sign-up in the SignUpGenius and note the family they are completing time for and the member must log this time in Uplifter and make note that it was completed on behalf of them.
No, all members must pay the admission fee regardless of their volunteer hours at the ice show unless the role does not allow the volunteer to view any part of the show. IE: volunteer remains in change rooms and cannot view the event from this position.
Board members and committee members are exempt due to the expected high volunteer hours they perform by attending meetings and performing duties but only if they exceed the minimum hours requirements by the ice show event. Coaches are also exempt.
It is important that the volunteer cancels their availability in the SignUpGenius if they cannot fulfil the position so that others may be able to sign up. By not canceling your availability, it prevents others from signing up and leaves an unfilled position that is necessary for the event to run smoothly as planned.
In addition to registering in the SignUpGenius, the volunteer must also record in Uplifter. This form will be used in addition to the SignUpGenius to confirm volunteer hours. If you have not cancelled online, do not record time in Uplifter. If there are any discrepancies, the DSC Volunteer Chair may contact you.
International and visiting skaters are exempt from the required volunteer hours or opt-out fee.
For skaters joining the Club mid-season or leaving before the season ends, the volunteer policy (i.e. the required hours or fee) will be based on the “Alternate Volunteer Hours Requirement” and chart titled “Volunteer Requirements – Seasonal.”
Exceptions may be granted due to medical or other extenuating circumstances on a case by case basis.
In such cases, the skater should contact the Club’s Volunteer Chair to discuss the situation.
Step 1 – It is the responsibility of the Volunteer to record their volunteer hours. Use the Volunteer SignUp Genius to view available positions and sign-up online.
Step 2 – Once the volunteer completes the volunteer time, the member will log the time into Uplifter from their account. DSC will use Uplifter as the tracking system to check completed hours.● Step 3- Submit all of your hours in Uplifter within 5 business days after the season ends.
● If hours are incomplete, the opt-out fee will be charged on the member’s account and the member will need to pay it before the subsequent season begins.
